Agilent Technologies

Standardized critical-care monitoring, measurement, and diagnostic functions are consolidated for centralized display in the software/hardware solutions offered by this Hewlett-Packard Company (HP) subsidiary. Agilent’s Viridia Information Center, shown here, runs using Windows NT on an HP computer, for simple, reliable information access, saving space formerly taken up by multiple machines with non-integrated functions. The Viridia system will be internet web-enabled by summer. (Photo: Mary Sargent, Business Development representative, Cardiac/Critical Care Systems)

Baxter Healthcare Corporation

The AVA 3Xi is the first-ever advanced venous access device with triple lumen and introducer all in one, making it useful for routine cardiac care as well as in surgery.  It permits insertion of a Swan-Ganz catheter for cardiac monitoring, and it allows the clinician to administer multiple medications and fluids. Because it requires only one insertion site, it minimizes patient pain and discomfort, can reduce the risk of complications and infection, and is more cost-effective than multiple traditional devices. Making its debut at the SCCM exhibition, the AVA 3Xi will be available for sale March 15, 2000.  (Photo: Anton Benitez, Associate Product Manager)

Dräger Inc., Critical Care Systems

Automatic Tube Compensation (ATC), discussed in several key symposium presentations, is just one of the exciting new feature in Dräger’s ventilator systems, including the Evita 4 (shown here), and the Evita 2dura.  ATC eliminates the extra work of breathing caused by the ET tube. The new Dräger Babylog 8000plus is a fusion of appropriate neo-natal and premature-infant ventilation modes; an integrated graphics screen; high-precision pneumatics; and lung-function, oxygen, flow and volume monitoring. Upgrades are available to bring several older Dräger models up to the Babylog 8000plus’ level of function. (Photo courtesy of Bradford M. Saunders, Marketing Manager)

Dymax Corp., a division of Bard Access Systems

The Site-Rite 3 ultrasound system is a low-cost easy-to-use scanner optimized to help doctors guide needles for percutaneous vascular punctures and nerve blocks. Its patented needle guide allows the physician to aim the needle precisely, visualizing the entire procedure on the flicker-free screen, which has digital freeze-frame and video-output capabilities. The guide has flexible lips that permit the scanner to be removed safely after needle placement. Site~Rite 3 runs on battery or AC power, and its roll stand has a tilting head, adjustable height, and locking wheels. (Photo: Karen Skolnick (left, black jacket) and Jodi Horvath)

Hamilton Medical

Hamilton Medical’s booth featured the patented Aladdin II active nasal CPAP device for low birth weight and premature infants, and the upgraded Galileo ventilator, both shown here.  The Galileo’s graphic screen now displays minute ventilation vs. respiratory rate, and plots the patient's idealized ventilation patterns. The new graphics greatly enhance the Galileo's ASV mode. The redesigned Aladdin II injects gas in fluid communication between the nostrils of the baby and the aerodynamically designed passageways of the device to optimize the fluid flow characteristics for both the ambient air and the injected gas during inhalation and exhalation of the patient. Hill-Rom, A Hillenbrand Industry

The innovative EpiCarePorter System includes the stand-alone CarePorter Cart, which interlocks with EpiCarePorter Ceiling Arms to make the transition between hospital-room and transport smooth and safe. The cart docks with most hospital beds and stretchers, and has attachment spaces for most equipment. Its ventilator shelf is compatible with models like the Puritan-Bennett 840, Siemens 300A and Bird Tbird, and lowers to fit under the head of the bed during transport.  Switching from wall gasses and electric power to cart-mounted sources is automatic and seamless.  The EpiCarePorter System not only keeps the ventilator and other care devices organized and lets them remain attached and active during transport, but also cuts down the number of personnel required to move the patient, all lowering the risk of transport-related injury. INO Therapeutics

INOmax inhaled nitric oxide gas received FDA approval in December 1999 for the treatment of full-term and near-term infants (more than 34 weeks gestation) with hypoxic respiratory failure, when used in conjunction with ventilatory support and other appropriate agents. The gas is delivered, as seen in the photo, via Datex-Ohmeda’s INOvent device, which also recently received FDA approval.  Click here on INOmax or INOvent to see VentWorld's feature stories on these products. Instrumentation Industries, Inc.

Instrumentation Industries makes high quality plastic and silicone products for use in respiratory care, anesthesia, critical care, and emergency medicine.  Their line ranges from endotracheal tube changers to component parts and accessories for ventilators and other equipment from Dräger, Mallinckrodt, Allied, Newport and others. With more than 30 years experience, their facilities can handle anything from single prototypes to full production runs, under strict quality control. Mallinckrodt, Inc.

Mallinckrodt continues to enhance the features of the Model 840, their latest Infant-to-Adult Ventilator, which has a state-of-the-art Tube Compensation option. This automatically adjusts pressure support to help overcome the pressure drop related to resistance in the artificial airway (ET tube), thereby decreasing the patient's work of breathing.  The next planned development for the 840 is a Neonatal mode; Mallinckrodt plans to submit an FDA-510k-approval application for this enhancement by the end of winter, with projected release this spring. Work also is being completed for use of the 840 with very premature infants. Masimo Corp.

The Masimo Radical uses signal extraction technology (SET) to provide pulse oximetry with new levels of accuracy and flexibility.  The small, rugged, lightweight unit can be removed from its docking station and used in handheld standalone mode, and interfaces with existing monitors, including non-Masimo devices, using the Radical’s SatShare interface. The digital display changes automatically to show its data upright when the unit is tilted between horizontal and vertical orientations. Masimo’s groundbreaking signal extraction design assures correct readings and reduces false alarms and missed events during patient motion, or with low perfusion.
