NON-INVASIVE VENTILATION CUTS COPD MORTALITY AND INTUBATION IN
GENERAL RESP. WARDS
[6/6/00] Early non-invasive ventilation (NIV), for mildly and moderately
acidotic COPD patients in general respiratory wards, led to reduced
need for invasive ventilation, reduced in-hospital mortality, and
faster improvement in pH and breathing rate in this UK study reported
in The Lancet...

MAY 18 NEJM: DAILY ICU SEDATION INTERRUPTION IN VENTILATED PATIENTS:
RESEARCH AND IMPLICATIONS
[5/18/00] Daily interruption of sedative infusion was associated
with earlier ICU discharge and shorter duration of ventilation,
compared to patients in whom infusions were not interrupted, in
a 128-patient study. A related editorial questions the strategy
and discusses possible risks and benefits...
